8 FREE Places to See in London, England!

London is an iconic and beautiful city in the south of England, but it is an expensive city! Luckily, there are plenty of free attractions around! Since London is the capital of England, it is an easy stop to make, so here’s my top 8 free places to see in this great city!

Though many of the things on this list offer more in depth tours for a price, they are still incredible sights to see from the outside!

8) Piccadilly Circus

Originally built in 1819, this intersection is the time square of the U.K. This area is filled with a mix of modern and bright illuminated signs and that classic London stone architecture! It’s a sight to see if you are in the area for sure!

7) the British Museum

Located on Great Russel Street in the Western Central area of London, this museum is huge with something for every traveler. With exhibits largely set up by time period and nation, you can spend an hour or all day wandering the walls of this beautiful museum. From Greek vases to the Rosetta Stone, there’s something for everyone.

Admission to the museum is free, though donations are accepted.

6) St. James & Green Park

Though much of it resides in the city of Westminster, St. James Park is a beautiful sight located near much of the main attractions in London. Specifically Green Park is a royal park that lies just to the north of Buckingham Palace. With beautiful landscaping, fountains and sculptures, and a convenient tube station, this is a beautiful and cheap way to spend your time in London!

5) Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey has been the coronation Church of England since 1016, and is the final resting place of 30 kings and queens. This gothic cathedral stands tall next to parliament and just a short walk from Big Ben!

Though touring the property and chinch will cost you between $5-20, visiting one of their daily services is free.

4) Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is the London residence and the administrative headquarters of the monarch of the United Kingdom. A beautiful structure with exquisite fountains and parks surrounding it, Buckingham palace is a sight to see.

3) Big Ben

Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the striking clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster. Though it’s been covered in scaffolding over the past few years, it’s an iconic sight for the city.

2) Shakespeare’s Globe

Right along the queens way, and right on the banks of the Thames in the heart of the city, a recreation of the original 1599 Shakespeares Globe can be found. Tours range from $10-20, but you can see much of it from the queens way. If you did want to spend the extra money, they do often have shows running!

The Queens Way is a stretch of pedestrian street along the river thames, and it pretty much has all the classic attractions of London. The eye, Big Ben, the torture museum, London Bridge, tower bridge, the globe and so much more are along this strip! Its a great way to have a fulfilling and easy day trip in this big city!
